The Beauty of Portugal

Portugal is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. There is just so much to see. In just one country you’ll find a fascinating contrast between modern and traditional, rustic and cosmopolitan.
Portugal is about as large as Scotland but it has double the population. It also has several mini cultures in its boundaries, making you feel that you are discovering different worlds in just one place.
For example, if you stay in Lisbon, the capital, you’ll feel like you’re in one of the busiest cities in the world. And just south of Lisbon, in Algarve (one of the most developed cities) you’ll also discover several prestigious and classy resorts and all the amenities you’d find in world class tourist destination. Other cosmopolitan areas are Combra, Evora, and Porto.
But if you drive deep into Portugal’s provinces, the high rises and busy streets recede and you’ll step into a traditional and rustic way of life. You’ll spend many peaceful and relaxing hours exploring the , small towns and villages. Instead of concrete sidewalks and tall buildings you’ll see rolling miles of countryside. Here life has changed very little in the past century.
The geography is just as different. Portugal is primarily celebrated for its coastlines, where there are miles and miles of beaches, dotted with resorts.
But even though Portugal is best known for its seaside coasts, there is more to this country than sand and sea. If you go to the northern par of Portugal you’ll reach the lush region of MInho, and the amazingly beautiful gorge and valley of the Douro. You can travel by railway, drinking in the beauty of the countryside, or you can book a cottage in the half-hidden paradise of Trás-os-Montes. Yes there are so many beautiful places in Portugal.
The Portuguese are very proud of their history and culture. Portugal has many cultural and ethnic influences which has led to it being one of the most fascinating countries in the world.. For example in some parts of the country you’ll see that many of its citizens are of Celtic and German lineage. But if you travel south of the Tagus, where the Moorish and Roman civilizations converged, the people tend to be darker-skinned and maintain more of a “Mediterranean” lifestyle.
Portugal is especially proud of its heritage as a seafaring community. After all Portugal was instrumental in discovering the different continents. Mariners like Vasco da Gama were instrumental in the discovery of Africa and America, and there was a time when Portugal was considered to be a colonial power.
